Matthew Brown is pleased to announce the gallery’s participation in this year’s edition of Frieze New York. The gallery will be exhibiting in the Focus sector with a solo presentation of recent work by Glasgow-based artist Hayley Tompkins. This will be Tompkins’s first solo presentation at an art fair in her over 25 year career as a critically acclaimed member of the UK avant-garde. Tompkins’s multidisciplinary practice investigates the relationships, gaps, and nexus points between oneself, objects, and space. In her painting, she oscillates between angular, repetitive marks and sensuous brushwork to build up dense, multilayered swaths of acrylic across her surfaces. Her works activate the liminal space between the pictorial and physical to consider the transformational potential of art.
For Frieze, Tompkins has made a new series of paintings on panel, which will be shown in the context of a sculptural installation of painted objects. The installation extends the logic of her 2022 survey exhibition at Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, which emphasized not just the physical objects, but the conceptual space, intimacy, and connection between them.
